Unhappy 4.0 V6 thud noise on start-up

There is a thud every once and awhile when I start it up. It's been doing this for about 3 weeks now. I have had a smell of antifreeze also. I can drive nellie about 15 miles and the smell is there. I will shut the engine off and open the hood and check the hoses and stuff for a leak, and i don't see any, and the level of antifreeze does not change. The color in the overflow bucket is really brown. The big hose that sits on the left hand side of the engine is really hot and feels like it wants to burst open when the truck is running. When the engine is off, there is no pressure inside the hose. My gas miles is really bad, 15 on the highway and not really there on the back roads. Are there any ideas as to why this is happening?

As far as gas mileage, I get at this time of year 15 to 18 out of my 03 4wd ext cab running highway. Get like 11 in city.
As far as radiator smell, one thing to check is the clamps on the radiator hoses. A small leak is not easy to find, and may only happen under high pressures. I had a bad clamp once, and found it when it rusted off and started pouring the fluid out on my garage floor
I would highly reccomend a coolant flush and fill. To do it right you would run it with water in the system after draining all the old out. Then water flush will get the crap out, then drain that and fill with new coolant 50/50 mix.
You shouldn't have any pressure when it is off, as the water pump isn't turning, so no pressure. Also, check the floorboard of the passenger side, it is where your heater core is, the part that heats the cab. That could have a leak you won't find outside, but typically you get a windshield film, and smell of antifreeze inside as well.

Oh! And the thud could be the ac pump, if you have your air conditioner on or your defrost (which also uses the ac pump) it will make noise kickin in when starting up. Mine does it when it wants to, might do it this week, may not......really odd, but been that way for years.

I'm on my phone, hard to answer all and remember, the hotness is probably because of this, as the engine warms up, the thermostat holds the water from flowing thru the engine, then when it reaches temperature, it opens flooding the engine with water, the temp drops, and thermostat closes, holds back the water and then opens at temp again. This keeps happening over and over, and the engine running also helps keep the pressure up.
DO NOT open that cap when its hot, I saw a guy get burned really bad doing that.....
For more details on the water system, pm me, I can lay out what you can do or get you links about what to do to change that fluid yourself, etc.

valve cover gasket was bad, had that replaced and I am getting better gas milage. The smell of anti freeze is still there. The hole is to small for me to find. The garage said it was by my water pump. So I had them change that while it was in. I am still getting the faint smell of it tho. And then they said, well, we can try this or that... I get so tired of hearing that one! Nickle and dimes here and there.
