Default Plugging in a 2004 4.0 SOHC engine wiring harness into a 2003 PCM

Hey guys,

I really need your help on this one ... I plugged in a 2004 4.0 SOHC engine wiring harness into a 2003 4.0 SOHC PCM.
I just need to know if this will work after I replace my 2003 air box with a 2004 + air box
The only reason I'm doing this is because some dumb a** at Ford decided to change the electral connection on the 2004 + injectors.
There was only two differences in the engine wiring harness besides the 6 injector plugs.
1. there's an extra electric plug that plugs into the tail light wiring harness. (I'm 99% sure that's what it's for.)
2. The 2004 MAF plug is different.
Will the 2003 PCM operate the 2004 + MAF?
I still have my 2003 wiring harness but I would need to spend $318 on 6new 2003 injectors to make this work because my old injectors are 200 miles away from me now.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Brian

WOW, Someone was brave enough to respond to my thread!
Actually my 2004 4.0 is running off of the 2003 computer. I didn't think it was possible, but I never got an answer, so I just turned the key and the engine fired right up.
The only problem is that my temp gauge isn't working, but I don't think that's because of the 2004 wiring harness. It's either the 2 sending units on top of the water pump or the gauge cluster. I hooked up one of those diagnostic tools and the engine isn't running too hot.
I guess I could run an external temp gauge if it comes down to that.

Resurrecting an old post in hopes of getting some answers. Happen to have a similar project-
2004 Ranger 4.0 w/ M50DR1HD 4x4 swap into 2001 Ranger 4.0 auto 4x4. PCM and PATS system are from the 2004, Instrument Cluster and under dash wiring harness remain from the 2001. Treypauls write up got me pretty far but having the same issues you describe here; Temp sensor not registering AND "extra" plug from the 2004 Engine/transmission Harness(Rear most plug on harness, assume tail lights)

What I know so far;
Reverse lights are out, believe 2001 frame harness routes reverse light wires through the drivers side floor pan harness and to the column. If that is in fact what this rear most plug is for, should be able to figure out reverse light wire colors and splice extra plug into them. Thoughts

Temp Sensor vs Temp Sender - We have (2) Sensors in the thermostat housing. Both are "push-in" types with retainer clips. From what I understand, (1) Sensor goes to the gauge while the other sensor goes to the PCM to cycle the cooling system. We can test to see if the gauge itself is working by turning the ignition On, unplugging the sensor on the left and simply grounding out the connection to the block - should peg the temp gauge all the way hot. If so, we know the gauge itself is working and simply can't read the sensor.
Where I'm stuck; I've installed a new temp sensor for 2001-2003 Ford Ranger 4.0 and the gauge is still not reading it. Not even sure if the coolant is cycling through, but curious how you made out on this or if anyone else has suggestions.

Thanks in advance

The short answer is:

The temperature gauge is different on a 2004 gauge cluster so a 2004 engine wiring harness won't operate your 2001 temp gauge.

The 2001 and 2004 clusters are also completely different, which is probably why you're having problems.
