Re: Thermostat housing
The whole thing? That black box with the sensors attached to the top? You have to take the intake manifold off to get it out. Besides that, it just unbolts. A bunch of gaskets and hoses.

Re: Thermostat housing
Rock auto has all the stuff if you want to save some money and buy it online. Most dealers have it in stock too. Less than $100 for all the parts. How do I know you ask? I just had this problem last month on my 2003.... I had to have a shop do it since I can't do this kind of repair myself anymore. My high rise apartment building management frowns upon doing that in the parking lot...

I replaced mine a couple of weeks ago. All you need to take off to get to it is the throttle body. There are some good vids on YouTube.

It's not too hard. Just a little cramped.

Re: Thermostat housing
You dont HAVE to take the intake off, I did it both ways but its 1000X easier to get it out without the plenum in the way. Its not hard to take off.

Re: Thermostat housing
Its not very hard just take the throttle body off and you can get to it. Took me about 30 min to change mine.

Re: Thermostat housing
I'm replacing my lower housing. I have the push-in temp senders with the clip. I tried to get the clips in after reinstalling the senders. I was only able to get them in about half way. Is there a trick to this or do I just need to be a little more persistent?

I did mine about 6 weeks ago, it took 5-6 hours to shoehorn the old one out and the new one in. As noted, you do need to take off the TB, if you disconnect the battery and disconnect the wiring from the alternator you can move the harness out of the way of the t-stat cover which will help. This would also be a great time to replace the aging rubber bypass hose and the hose leading from the housing to the heater pipe. I swear, if you replace the latter hose it had better be only Motorcraft or you're asking for probs; been there done that and I wrote a thread advising what happens.
*You can buy the lower housing at Oreilly for ~$22; there are different styles to be aware of. Some have one temp sender, some have two. Some have a threaded in sender(s), some have senders held in with a c-clip. You can buy one at Ford for $60 and wait for it to arrive, just like waiting for Rockauto to ship it to you. If you compare them and look at the markings really carefully, it seems like they just might all come from the same vendor.
