Default Chirping / squeaking from my 2000 ford ranger 4.0

Hi im new to the forum and I have joined because i have a problem that i was hoping to get some insight on. I have a really annoying squeak/chirp coming from under the hood of my 4.0 ranger. ive replaced the belt tensioner already and that didnt fix the problem. with a little more investigation it sounds like it is coming from the rear of the engine, or from the trans. ive been searching the net and ive seen everything from bad smog pumps, exhaust leaks, the cam synchronizer. im lost right now and have no clue what to do next. the truck is my daily driver to work and school so i need to figure out what the problem is before it can progress to something more than "just a noise".

This seems to be a pretty common problem with these trucks so any insight on what i can do to resolve this would be greatly appriciated.

----------

just an added note. the noise isnt relative to engine speed. infact it stops around 2500-3000 rpm unless the truck is cold.

I'm having the same exact issue with my 2001. I just don't know if I should replace the tensioner or the actual serpentine belt. My sound is definitely coming from the belt.

How difficult was it to replace the tensioner?

With the engine running, rub a bar of soap on the edges and back of belt and see if it quiets down. No it won't make it slip. Antifreeze, Armor All and other stuff makes the belt work like rosin on a violin bow and squeak. It's not a cure, won't last but good diagnostic tool. Fan blades will be really, really close to your knuckles but Hey you're a Ranger Man, Right?

Thanks dor the reply folks. The tensioner wasn't too bad. 10 minutes and a busted knuckle later it was on. I did a little trouble shooting yesterday, taking the belt off and briefly starting the truck. The noise was gone but then again it doesn't do it ALL the time (its only quiet when your trying to find the dang thing causing it) so I may be chasing dead ends. While i was doing that i bumped into the idler pulley and it sounded like it was shot. Anyways, I would check the cam synchro but I honestly don't know where mine is at. Checked where a typical Ford distributor would have been and didn't see anything. I may change it just to have some peace of mind. Truck has 154xxx on it and needs some serious tlc (its been played with hard and put away wet).

sounds like a bad serp belt. another thing to check that doesnt cross to many minds, check the alternator. sometimes when that is goin bad it will chirp also. the pulley goes bad on it. but most likely its the belt.

I'm pretty sure it's the idler pulley. sounds like its hanging up a bit when you spin it by hand. By the way does anyone know where the cam synchronizer is on the 4.0 ohv? Been looking and I can't find the dang thing.

Newer idler pulley from the local salvage yard fixed the problem. Been driving the truck for a few days now and no squeak/chirp. Hope this helps someone out.

hi new to forum myself
have the same problem with uk spec 2.5l ranger wildtrack intermittent chirruping squeak which seems to be a belt
this has been driving me nuts
i would`ve put money on it being a slipping belt or water pump
left engine on tick over to open hood to investigate and the squeaking stopped when i touched the hood check it out again and its definitely the hood which need adjusting
hope this helps
