haha shit i was gettin 7-10 around town. on the freeway i was able to squeeze out maybe 13-15. swapped out plugs, wires, cleaned throttle body, oil change, rear diff service, re-packed wheel bearings. and now im gettin about 12-14 around town and about 17 freeway. i found that my plugs were not gaped right, they were around .080 when they are supposed to be between .052-.056, and a couple of my wires were falling apart lol, also found some bad vaccum lines i had to replace.

2002 4.0 4x4 automatic stock right now

About 20mpg mostly city. A UltraGauge or Scan Gauge II will help a lot. I also know proper driving techniques.

In serious need of a tune up as well. 150k miles on original plugs and wires.

I think i did pretty good on my first tank. I got 380miles mixed(city & highway) just b4 the guage touched the E. And of course, i'm sure i could've got another 20miles on the last gallon, but i didnt wanna take that risk. I guess that makes it right around 23.5mpg city & highway. I'm pretty sure if i did all highway, i could reach 450-470 easily. I'll be going to austin this weekend, so i'll post back my all highway mileage. Also wanted to add that i just bought this truck & did EVERY possible maintenance repair. Pulled upper & lower intakes, TB, IAC, MAF, and cleaned them until they were spick n span. New spark plugs & wires. Replaced motor oil, coolant, & tranny fluids. Also replaced the air filter with a K&N, & did the "weird" spark plug wire switch mod. And finally, i shift @ 2k rpms everytime & never go faster than 60mph.

EDIT- Oops. Didnt realize i was in the v6 forum. My apologies...

Installed my lift now with 33x12.50x15s and steel wheels and mpg is 17.1mpg at the moment. I highly recommend the Ultraguage. I let my girl drive it around today and on that trip we averaged 11.9mpg...She never looked at the thing or knew i was keeping track.

20 on the last fill up, included 90% city driving and 10% off roading (spinning the tires in mud). A lot more than I was expecting for sure!

I think that you are right - lots of Lima owners getting numbers like that on a tank of gas. Yeatzees numbers for a 3.0 are pretty respectable, especially mixed driving (mostly around town). 3.0s are known for their economy - generally for their long life.

I end up driving 3 miles to each destination in this winter weather so my engine never gets to warm up much, I'm pulling 12.5 in town but I did do a trip and got 18. I just changed all my plugs an wires, cleaned MAF, IAC, and put in a k&n filter but I haven't gotten a mpg reading yet.

Philip - I'm not sure of your route to work, but you might consider biking on the nice weather days if it's safe to do so. Or maybe walking. Keep the gas in the tank for the longer rides.

Roughly speaking, it looks like the 4s are getting 20-25% better fuel economy, but if you need the 4WD or the extra torque/power to haul things about, that might be the general trade-off.
