Anyone replace the Coolant temp. sensor on a 2004 XLT 4.0 Ramger? Where is it located(pic. if you can) and how hard of a job is it?

The sensor is mounted on the lower intake manifold near the water outlet/thermostat housing

Ok went outside to install the sensor.There are 3 sensors that look identical.Which one is the coolant sensor? There's one thats accessible without taking anything off.The other 2 I would have to take items off to access it.If you're standing in front of the truck which would be the coolant sensor?Thanks again

It will be near the thermostat housing. It will have just 1 single wire coming off of it

If your standing in front of the truck you can see these 2 on top and they are not the one you need. it's the other one I cant get a good picture of it without taking stuff off.

help with p0402 err code! replaced 02 upper sensor per advanced auto/dpfr also replaced.. am i looking at egr... it did pass a suck test, the engine did stumble..

BOTH are coolant temp sensors. One is for the PCM. The other is for your gauge. Which one is which? I don't know but I need to find out. My new engine (06) is not displaying the coolant temp in my truck(01). I used all 06 sensors.

From what I can tell, you CANNOT remove those electrical connectors or remove the sensor without removing the intake manifold.

Yes I was reading somewhere online how to tell the difference between the 2 was that usually the one that went to the guage had only 1 wire coming from it and the one that went to the pcm had 2 wires going to it but both of them coolant sensors have 2 wires going to them.

Reason why I got to change mine is I got a coolant temp is always low check engine light code and it said the possible solutions was either the thermostat or the coolant temp sensor was bad or the antifreeze was too low. Well my antifreeze is fine so I was just gonna change both the thermostat and the temp sensor to be on the safe side especially since you have to take off the intake manifold to access them.

Speaking of taking off the intake manifold does anyone know how hard that is to do?

There must be an issue with the Rangers pertaining to this problem. I think it's the sensor because my heat still gets hot and if I go by my gauge then my heat should be luke warm.But you're right change bought while you're there! I have a 2004 4.0 6cy.
