Default 1999 Ranger Not Starting

Not sure if the problem is weather related or not but for the last 2 weeks the temp at night goes down to around 28 degrees. With that said here is my problem. If i go to start my truck early in the morning the engine cranks but does not start. If I continue to try to start it the battery runs down pretty fast.If I leave it alone after cranking it a few times and try to start it later like about a half hour later it starts right up.Once I have it started and drive the truck ,any time during that day I can turn it off and it will it start right back up whether it br emmediatly or hours later.I have only been having this trouble in the last few weeks since the temputure has turned cold at night. It was around 28 last night and the truck would not start on first try this morning. The previuos night it was still cold but warmer in the morning when I tried to start the truck and the truck started right up.
I live in the california desert and have never had this problem before.Could it be my battery as it goes down fast when trying to start the truck?Or is there a bigger problem going on here.Once I start the truck and look at the battery gage it is always at half way if that means anything. At night the head lights are thier ussual brightness. Thanks for any and all help.
Shaun

I don't know much, but if the battery runs down that quickly it may be the issue - gains charge so starts after sitting a short time but loses it after sitting a while. Most auto parts stores will test your battery for free. How old is the battery?

Another possibility that I've run into before was the fuel pump. Mine started going out, so it would start if I had not let it sit for too long, but overnight or when I got off work the fuel pump was letting the fuel in the line flow back into the tank, and it took it quite a while for the pump to get fuel back up to the engine before it would start.

The battery is 6 or 7 years old.It is 8:30 am and did not freeze last night and I just went out and tried to start the truck. It fired right up.The fuel filter was replaced last year but the fuel pump is the origial pump.I had some work done on the truck(4.0) last year.Had points, plugs, wires and new coil put in.My only complaint with the shop that did it was I noticed a slight decress of get up and go (power) after they did the work.I took it back and they re-tested everything but said they find nothing wrong.Have never been able to get that slight loss off power back.
But as I said with the current problem of not starting...it fired right up this morning so I am not sure what is going on there.I have read on this forum of others with about the same problem and no fixes where found as it either fixed itself or they have not found the problem as of yet.So I am at a loss as to what it may be.
