Hi, I'm new to this forum, I've been looking for a Ranger lately and I found a 97 XLT, auto 4.0. What I want to ask about is when we went to go look at the truck it wouldn't start, and the dealer thought it was the fuel pump. So he proceeded to hit the gas tank and then it started right up! When we took the truck for a drive I looked in the glove box and there were six relays that looked to me like fuel pump relays. What I want to know is, do you think that this is the fuel pump or is this some other problem? Also this truck has about 220,000 miles, once it started it ran well and it looks like the engine has been taken care of, do you think this is a good truck? Or should we look at something else? Any input is appreciated! Thanks!

Needing to smack the gas tank to get the pump working is the best sign ever that the pump is going out. Lots of miles, and you didn't say what he's asking, but I'd want him to install a new pump, and watch it being changed.

Haha, yeah that's what me and my dad thought too. We just wanted to ask someone who has a ranger, in case it was some other problem. He's asking $2,250 for it as is, and $2,995 if he has someone replace it. I know that me and my dad can replace the pump ourselves, so what I'm wondering now, is if this would be a good deal?
