Default HELP!!! How do I change a radiator cooling fan?

I have a lil dilema with my 94 4.0L Ranger. My radiator cooling fan is cracked in multiple locations and I was wondering how do I get the old fan off to put the replacement one on? and how do I get the protective shroud off without having to tear the radiator out?

Loosen the fan shroud, move it back. There should be like 4 bolt that hold the fan on.

thanks for the reply man, how do i go about holding the 4 bolts on the water pump pulley? I hav the performance tools ford tool set, but I can't get the breaker bar with the larger wrench that keeps the water pump pulley from spinning?

The serpentine belt should have enough grip to hold the water pump in place while loosening the bolts holding the fan and clutch on.

Could you get a wrench on the back of the fan clutch nut? That should allow you to put some leverage on the nut or bolts holding the fan blade to the clutch.

Yeah, I could with theese tools,

this is the kit I have: http://www.amazon.com/Performance-Tool-Fan-Clutch-Wrench/dp/B0002KO3AQ
My dad told me I should weld a peice of flat stock onto a 1/2" square stock that would fit in the square 1/2" drive on the wider wrench, then I'd hav enough clearance to fit both the wrenches in, because I couldn't fit the breaker bar with the longer skinny wrench.

What about a small pipe wrench? If you have one of those, it might do the job. I had to use one on my buddies Durago to get the fan off so I could change his water pump.

^^THIS!!! He could probably get a 8-10 inch crescent wrench in there too. Then use your GI JOE combat grip!

Either the wrench or if you have air tools. Leave the belt on give it a burp with an air hammer on a side of nut with a down ward motion and it will loosen right up.

+1 air hammer. leave the belt on and hit it with the air hammer it'll come right off. might not even have to loosen the shroud to get it out.

The cooling fan screws onto the water pump shaft on most of those engines, some are left hand, some right hand, also some fans bolt from the front of the hub, some from the rear, if yours bolts on from the front, unbolt the fan shroud and move it back, unscrew the bolts and remove the fan. If it bolts on from the rear, you gotta take the fan hub off the water pump. The four bolts on the water pump pully only hold the pulley on.

On my 92, we took out like 2-4 nuts (can't remember sorry) that held the shroud on, and when we got the fan loosened, the shroud and the fan came out as one. I had the same problem, my fan was cracked in multiple areas.
