Does anyone know where to buy a fuel pressure regulator for my 2002. I went to autozone and they said they don't carry it and tried to get me to buy a whole new fuel pump.

my dad bought his ranger (now mine) brand new in spring '04. we started having this same problem once the summer heat rolled in. we spent a few weeks trying all sorts of stuff and finally took it to the dealer, their explanation: ethanol.

best guess since then is that the alcohol mixture (up to 10 percent at all my local stations) evaporates in the lines on a hot day and causes fluctuations in the fuel pressure. Whether or not that is truly the cause I find that parking in a shady spot and/or on a level to slightly forward slope clears up the issue pretty consistently.

any thoughts? is this just BS? has anyone else bothered to ask their local dealer's service dept? we've been dealing with it for 6 years without any noticeable effects (other than irritation)

The only place i have found the fuel pressure regulator is on partsbin.com and it says its a universal part. The alcohol could be an issue too. i might try regular gas for a while just to see before buying a new regulator...

Check your fuel pressure on the rail before you replace the regulator.

Had the same problem, turns out I had an injector that had something causing it to leak just enough fuel into the cylinder causing a drop in pressure on the rail. a couple of cans of injector cleaner and a couple of tanks of 93 octane fuel, problem solved for me.

Always try the cheap fixes before you start spending a lot of money.
