Default Chg Oil/filter on 2011 4.0 Ranger at 970 miles

Many many years ago, I read (before the internet) somewhere that the first 900-1,000 miles was an awful amount of engine ware. That was the reason the author said to change oil and oil filter in the 1,000 mile period.

This makes a lot of sense to me, since Ford tells new cars / truck owners not to drive 'wide open" in the first 1,000 miles.

The oil plug was not very hard to come out. In fact, it was too easy to come out. The filter, "what a b****!!!." If there had been room, I was ready to dive a spike thru the filter, and use the spike to spin the filter off.

After going to the auto parts store, to buy a oil filter wrench that fits over the filter and uses a 3/4" drive, I got the filter off.

Used a NAPA Gold filter and Mobil 1 5w/30 oil.

I then updated the myford website with my home service.

I have a spreadsheet that I also update. Spreadsheet keeps track of the following:
current miles/MPG
YTD miles/MPG
last oil change
miles on current tires
and anything else that one would need to know to keep up with maintenance.

my total miles 974
average MPG 16.4
worse MPG 15.0
best MPG 18.6

am looking forward to see if my MPG will increase with Mobil 1 and now that the engine is broken in.

I went searching for oil filter relocation kits and found that they are year specific and for some reason only go up to a 2007 model.
I have no idea why.
Maybe a call to a local auto parts dealer for inquiry is in order.
I wouldn't mind relocating my filter too, just for convience.
Keep us advised, Please.

The first oil change does not need to be at 1000 miles, 5000 miles is just fine. However if you want to, it's your money. Todays vehicles do not need to be broken in but what do the engineers at Dodge, GM, and Ford know anyway.

Then why does the owner's manual for a new Ford say, "To take it easy for the first 2,000 miles or so, and don't compute mpg because of break-in"? One extra oil change isn't go to bank-rupt anyone -- especially after buying a new $20,000 vehicle.

I changed my oil/filter on my 1st Ranger (91) at 1k 2k and 3k. I put about 280,000 on that motor. I read about it somwhere, and it seemed correct to me, and was rather cheap to do. It can't hurt.

I had about 1500 miles on my truck and changed over to full synthetic . I have approx 36500 miles on it now and change the oil every 4 to 6 weeks . Just me as I have been doin this to all of my vehicles . I put a lot of miles on them and I try to keep up with the maintainance , oil , trans fluid , rear end fluid , filters etc .

My MPG did increase with subsequent use of the truck since it was brand new. I also used Mobil 1 5W30 Syn since the first change. I started out getting only like 14 or 15 MPG, and have since settled at around 19.5 to 20 MPG mixed driving. Motorcraft filters for me only though.

I also believe in the first few frequent oil changes. Many years in the nitro rc car hobby taught me a lot about the importance of engine maintenance. Sure they were only two strokes that could fit in your hand (about 2 cc.) but i have gotten them pushing close to 1.5 to 2 horsepower and those little beast can hit close to 44k rpm. Those suckers saw some wear. Personally i think the lil bit of money for those oil changes and decent motor oil from there is worth the extra miles it should give your engine. I think of it as the blood of your truck!

Also, im sure i would just have to search it but has anyone developed a fair maintenance schedule for the Ranger. I know of like the average miles for everything but wouldnt mind seeing what others think.

My owner's manual doesn't state that. In fact the manual makes no mention of a break in period of any kind.....strange that I have an 08 too.

I changed the oil on my 2011 at a 1000 miles. What can it hurt? Not really putting a dent in the wallet seeing as the first year of maintenance at the dealership is free, for me anyway. I don't see it being a waste of money as long as the op thinks it was a good investment. It's not our money we shouldn't worry about it.

The manual doesn't mention a need for an oil change so soon. They only mention about taking it easy for the initial break in period. Will it hurt to change the oil so soon? Maybe/maybe not. Some companies use a special break in oil from the factory and don't recommend changing it out too soon. As to if Ford does that or not, I don't know.

In my case, I changed the oil at 2,500 miles because six months were up from the date of manufacture. The manual doesn't mention doing time changes, so I may have just thrown my money away by not waiting until I had 7,500 miles like the manual recommends. It's all a judgement call on your part. It's your vehicle and your money. So in the end it comes down to what you want to do.
