Question Help, 2004 Intermittent Starting Problem

Having an intermittent starting problem with my 2004 4.0l, manual transmission. It always starts in the morning, but it seems like if I'm running errands, the engine is warm and I kill it for 10 min. or so, that's when the problem happens. It will crank and then fire, but the firing is erratic and then it stalls out like it's choking. If I let it sit for half an hour or so, it starts with no problem.

It doesn't have this problem every time, only 4-5 times in the last month (and twice yesterday). I've only had the truck for a month.

I've cleaned the IAC, cleaned the MAF sensor, ran some Seafoam through the tank, changed the fuel filter... doesn't seem to have solved it.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Chase

Hi, I am having what I think is the same problem with my truck. Does yours vibrate before shutting off? My whole truck shakes when this problem happens.

My 08 sometimes does this, only when warm. It will "catch" and fire for a second than stall and the whole truck gives a shake. I am putting new plugs and wires on soon so we will see if that is the problem. I am also going to get a new fuel filter too.

Check/replace plugs(.035in) and wires, use the tune up grease, it helps to ensure a good connecton. On the coil side as well. Check connector at coil for cleanliness and tightness. If you have a multimeter check the coil to make sure is not bad. Google for the how to.

The truck is vibrating for one or both of two reasons. Idle too low, or cylinder(s) is/are misfiring.

If you are going to do this, check out this for help first.

Going to replace wires and plugs will not fix this problem. sounds like you already have a truck that is running then vapour locks after a certain amount of time. with a carb you would hammer down the throttle and get the airlock out. I am not 100% sure how to clear a line on a EFI engine.

now what it sounds like it could be is a plugged up catilitic converter also.

The problem ended up being a slowly dying fuel pump. I replaced the pump back in May (my first big diy repair!), and no problems since. Thanks for all the good suggestions!
