Re: ranger wont restart after overheating
Check the electrical connectors at the t'stat and the air intake hose near the air filter. I forgot that one once and caused myself some grief.

it sounds to me like your head gasket is bad like previously stated, when my 4.0 head gaskets were bad it would run but miss untill all of the water was burnt out of the cylinders.

Re: ranger wont restart after overheating
This my first Ranger, But all I ever drive is stuff one stop before the crusher. I always have a jug of coolant, a qt or 2 of oil and if there are more things leaking, that too. in the trunk of my junk. If you want to minimize the damage, you keep up on the leaks.

Re: ranger wont restart after overheating
Maybe check the oil, pull some out on the dip stick and feel the oil between two fingers. Feel for any smooth very ver very very small metal. If it feels like metal, then one of the bearings went out, which is a new egine or rebuild. Other then that if you cant find the problem, take it to ford and pay the 80bucks to find the problem.

Re: ranger wont restart after overheating
as stated check your temp sensor connection, could also be the temp sensor itself, should be near the return coolant hose on the top of the engine. if it can't sense the right temperature it will not send in the correct air/fuel mixture.
EDIT: you can test it with an OHM's reader.

Re: ranger wont restart after overheating
The temp sender or a lack thereof will not prevent it from starting. The engine uses open-loop mode and preset air/fuel mixture values on a cold start. Sensors are ignored. Once it is warmed up, an improper reading would cause it to run inefficiently but not prevent it from working at all.
See if there is a water in the oil or oil in the water first.

ahhh gotcha, this had happened to me on my TBI'd chevy, so i had assumed it would have went hand in hand. since the TBI's were considered somewhat fuel injection.

Well I do need a motor. Heads warped and t chain guides burnt anyone ever bought a Jasper reman engine? Almost 4k but come with. 3yr. 100k parts and labor warranty. I don't want to chance a junk yard engine. And be here again in a yr. bought this truck new and so it's worth keeping after all it only has 104k on it. Ps. Everyone should take note it was the PLastic thermostat housing that crack on the back side caused the overheating. In heavy FAST traffic preventing me from pulling over fast enough.
