Take the shift motor off the back of the transfer case, don't unplug it, and see if the motor trys to turn when you shift into 4x4. If it doesn't work, its more than likely that the shift motor is bad.

after re reading it that happened on my 93 i would press the button for 4wd and it would light up but wouldnt engage sometimes. i had to put it in and out of 4wd often on cold days so it would get use to it.

I had issues with the lack of engagement from the front end even though the transfer case was working. My 98 ford ranger is pretty prone to the auto-locking hubs of being a POS. So I bought some manual hubs (http://www.baseline4x4.com/p-9067-15...1-08-pair.aspx). That solved that issue now I am working through the blinking light issue.

The greatest irony in the whole shit mess is that when I need them to work the transfer case engagement did not work and had the little blinkly light tease. After just saying frock this and using speed to do the trick I made my way to my final destination. Anyway on down the mountain at a gas station where there is no snow I tried the 4x4 switch... worked fine on dry pavement.

On mine it could be the GEM that has been mentioned since I have other issues that point to that. The dome light turns on at random even when the doors are not open. Sometimes the light will not turn off even with the doors closed and keys out of the ignition. Basically I have to move the truck to get the dome light to shut off. Then the dome light will not work for a few cycles of opening the doors. Then it will operate normally. In addition the door chime will make racket even when all doors are closed even with the ignition turned to run before I start the engine. Only starting the engine will fix that issue.

I have similar if not exact same issue. I am certain its something with the fuse box or wire connections behind it.

Switch ur dome light on using the switch on the dashboard. Your dome light may or may not come on. Now drive down a bumpy road and see if it goes on and off. That's how I figured my issue out.

Its fuse 26 I believe.

I replaced my vac hubs with the avm rugged ridge manual lockouts.
My 4wd lights starting flashing randomly and the 4wd wouldn't work and be reliable, and I thought it was because of the manual lockouts, until I noticed how it reacted to bulls going down a rough dirt road. Seeing those 4wd lights flash and my dome light do the same when hitting bumps pointed me in the right direction.

I still haven't got it fixed. The fuse box is secured with 3 screws but I can't figure out what to do next. You can't pull the box out far enough to really do anything or see anything in that small area.
