Exclamation worn timing chain

i read that some rangers timing chain rattles bad because its worn. it starts at 2500 rpm's and does it until 3000 rpm. i does it only when cold and i have been having a rattle like this but i always thought it was my exhaust until i read a thread post on RPS. anyone on here have this problem?

They rattle because Ford fucked up on the tensioners. It was "fixed" in 03 but my 03 and others do it. Mine also does it when the engine is cold at those RPMs and it goes away when its warm. It is not worth to fix since either you spend a lot of money on special tools or you spend money on labor. It would be a better idea to just throw in a low mile junkyard engine. Just ignore it man.

It all really depends on how much you pay for the engine. You could find a low mile engine for like 600 and sometimes they are more. You would have to pull the engine out to fix the rear tensioners so why put the same engine back? You will be fine though. Mine has been doing it since before I knew what the problem was. I have 138K miles and its still running fine. Can't say the same about the rest of the truck though.

The chains themselves aren't what wear out....it's the tensioners and plastic chain guides that deteriorate.

It all depends on how much you get an engine for. They range in price depending on mileage. I got my 1,000 mile 2006 engine for $1500.....all this yards 4.0 SOHC's were the same price....so why not get the 1,000 mile unit. Did the swap a few months back for the following reasons: timing chain rattle as worse as its ever been, punk teenager driving it the last 110,000miles, it sucked down muddy water down the intake on 3 maybe 4 occasions and it internally had suffered.

Check out www.car-part.com. It's where I found my engine. It's a website catalog of a crap ton of junkyards and their inventories. I wanted the newest year possible....less likely of a chance to suffer from the timing chain faults of the early model SOHC's. You may need to look up 2004+ instead of 2003....they seem to be seperated in junkyard computer systems.

check your local parts store to see if they carry the new chain tensoir. replacing it with the new style should help the rattle. the old style worked only on oil pressure new style also has a spring in it to aid before the oil pressure cames up
