Default egr issues

I have a 2002 Ranger with 116000 miles, 4.0 L SOHC motor. Runs great but now starting to see little things pop up. Check engine light came on and the code came back as the EGR vlave. I replaced it with a new egr valve from Advance Auto and the light still is on. The code came back as the same thing. Funny thing is that the light is on most of the time but does go out once and a while. I did find an egr pressure feedback sensor and also a egr vacuum solenoid from Advance but not sure on which I should be replacing. Money is tight so I need to make sure I get the right one. I do see a change in my fuel milage (now worse) with this egr issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
njforestfire

Before you replace either the solenoid or the sensor, check your vacuum hoses for any leaks. There should be one hose connected to the sensor & two connected to the solenoid. Also, if you can't find any good trouble-shooting info. from a Haynes or Chiltons manual, you can go to your local library & access the much better Mitchells manual, via their computers.

While I was T/S my surging problem today, I found some good info. online at freeautomechanic.com/egr there's three easy tests for the EGR sensor, solenoid, & valve. I performed the test for the sensor, & found the unit bad. So, these tests may help you!

I know I don't have any bad vacuum hoses for if I did the light would always be on. I also inspected the hoses for any holes or cracks - nothing found.

What would be the purpose of the bb? Is it tight in the hose or can it move freely? Seems to me like installing that bb it would act like a check-valve of some sort....hmmm
