Default Pinging in 4.0 sohc

I'm getting a pinging noise under load. Usually going up a hill will do it. The pinging is light, and premium fuel makes it go away.

Is there a "fix" for the pinging, so I can use regular fuel?

Engine has 71k miles, has new iridium plugs ( motorcraft), mobile 1 oil..

Auto or Manual, what gears do you have? Time for Seafoam perhaps?

It's an automatic with 3:55 open diff. And stock size tires. On a recent trip I ran a can of seafoam through the fuel tank. I added the seafoam, filled the fuel tank and then drove 350 straight miles on the interstate.

Time to add it through a vacuum hose?

I'd be careful about running it through a vac hose. If it needs it, then it may foul the new plugs.

The original plugs were different from left bank to right bank. They looked he same but they had different part numbers. My new plugs were all the same. I went to two different parts stores looking for plugs. Niether one showed different plugs for left ands right bank.

Why different plugs?

I was going to suggest plugs...that's a big problem w/ them...get a set of Autolite double platinums and you'll be good to go. Also, try a slightly thicker oil like 10w30 or 40.

What octain fuel are you having to use?
Almost every car and truck require at least 87. Some ownes manuals say 91 has a minimum.
You may have to run the higher octain.

there was a ford service bulletin on weak coilpacks not producing enough voltage to the plugs causing pinging.
