A engine will last for ever as long as you maintain it and dont abuse it

the first thing to start wearing is the rocker arms, you can hear them. 200,000 miles is about all you can get out of them before the are in need of some rework

that was kinda a douchbag move on you my friend.
you asked how long an engine will last. we have no clue on to how long your engine will last. an engine will last for ever just like stl said. my truck has rite at 160 on it and i dont have a single issue and between me and my brother we abuse the hell out of it.. so i really dont know what the point of that was

You could buy a civic and go to a ricer forum... they will tell you if you spend $20,000 on the car you can get 400-hp to the front two wheels, 30 mpg, and the engines will last forever as long as you replace the head gasket every time you floor it with 20 lbs of boost.
No one can ever know how long a engine will last unless you drive a chevy and then we can tell you that it will be very soon. Every engine, even a 2003 3.0 and another 2003 3.0, will be different. I could be the strength oth the particluar one or it could be something along the lines how you drive it, what you do with it, and how well you maintain it. 300K is a ton of miles for that engine and if you keep it up it will go for much longer... but once again, no matter how well you take care of it and treat it the is always a situiation that can happen that is beyond your control that could kill it or just put it in the shop for the day.
So please dont come on this site, ask a very vague and general question with little info provided, and insult some of the most knowledgeable people when it comes to Ford Rangers! We are familiar with these motors and since you are asking us about them the it seems like we do know more than you about them.
Fair enough mikertldg?

Yes it is a good motor. Now expand for us... like have you owned it for all 300K, anything every go down on it, what kind of punishment do you put it through(like towing), what kinds of liquids do you use with it and the drivetrain. Its a ton of factors and the factors become more important when there gets to be more miles on it.

the 4.0 is a great motor some early years pre-98 had head problems all have the rocker problem but they are very strong and have great torque, I have had mine at 13psi for a long time and still holding up

Well i have had the truck about a year so prob put about 100k on it. Most of the time just driving but do play with it and usually hard. Changed a tranny and the oil and plugs and wires. I pull a small fishin boat a tent trailer and a quad trailer and ski-doo trailer. So i am inpressed, and will prob buy another one when this one does quit.

They are great motors and with full synth oil show little wear for the miles. My 2001 edge has 150K on her now and the motor is going strong, compression was still good in all cylinders and I have had zero issues. I do know and agree that the rocker arms are subject to more wear because of the lower rate of oil to them. I got over 300K out of my 1993 ranger and I dont see why I wouldnt out of this one? I have some minor things I have fixed, (belt tensioner and idle pulley replaced), looks like i might be replacing the water pump here before long, but nothing major. The same applies for any motor, a good full synthetic oil when the engine is new, frequent oil changes, etc will make yoru chances of the motor lasting even greater!

the rocker problem can be fixed with rocker spacer it helps the oiling and lessens the noise a little too.

Frankly at 300,000 miles you have already exceeded the useful service life of most automobiles. If it blows up tomorrow, I wouldn't be surprised. But hell, it could last another 100,000 at this point.
