howdy all,

2003 fx4. i have a small leak in my lower boot, driver's side. i took it in for yearly inspection at midas and they failed me for it. he says the whole system needs to be replaced (of course), and he wants 800 bucks for rack and pinion replace, power steering flush and fill, and alignment. he says he's giving me "a deal". the price sounds about right (the dealership wanted 1,000 just for the rack and pinion, but they're always higher).

the truck drives fine (75,000 miles) and has been just a drip leak for a few months. just wondering if i'm getting hosed. i'm not mechanically inclined.

If it were mine, I'd try a stop leak product first, clean the area up to confirm it has stoppped then bring it back to be re-inpected. Beyond that, I'd swap the rack myself.
