Default 93' 4.0L Stalling when idling in D or R

Hello,

First post here but, I really need some help!

Ok, The Truck had been sitting for awhile and just started to drive again.

1. CEL is On, Truck will stall at red lights or when I let off the gas.

Things I have replaced: MAF Sensor, IAC Valve, Throttle Position Sensor, New Air Filter & Fuel filter.

I Reset the EIC after installing the new MAF Sensor and the CEL went off and the truck ran fine for a little. after sitting 1 night it went back to stalling and dying if @ idle in Gear.

I have tried running it without the MAF connected and it will run but, still runs pretty rough and will stall out when at red lights or letting off throttle to make a turn.

Important note: I do not have catalytic converters on the truck anymore but, the 02 sensor is before the catalytic converters on this model.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!

hmm. You've replaced everything I would have suggested replacing or cleaning. Does it idle perfectly normal and fine in park/neutral? If it does, I sadly think the problem could be the torque converter on the transmission.

Yeah, I was thinking that or the EICI might be messing up.

Because it seems to run fine after I reset it. Just for a little bit though or, there is a vacuum leak I am not aware of.

Well, the problem is the difference in engine load with the transmission in P/N vs D/R is should be minimal.

Well it does die if I let it run on Idle for too long in Park.

I have adjusted the Throttle to run a little higher and it did not seem to be stalling as much either in Park or Drive.

Thanks again for your help!

hmmm. well if it still shits in P/N, the torque converter may not be the problem. However, assuming you adjusted the throttle plate stop screw, that is not fixing anything. Masking the problem perhaps. But that's basically putting a bandaid over a gunshot. It is still a gsw that is going to be infected and bleed.

I agree, After extensive searching on some other forums I am leaning toward a bad ECU.

Aparently, it's pretty common and I might be able to have my father replace the transistor/capcitors for me.
He is an electrical engineer.

Thanks again!

ok, first (certainly not last) post.

i just bought a 97 4.0 xlt and it started to stall and die with all the above mentioned symptoms. im not a mechanic by far but i feel this truck is gonna make me one. i noticed that the two harder pvc lines on the passenger side are cracked (assuming vacuum lines). please tell me this is probably the problem.

thanks - chris

Its been sitting--first thing I'd suspect is old gas with possible condensation in it or other build up in the engine from sitting? I'd try some new gas and try the seafoam suggestion. I just did my engine recently and perked it up a bit : )

----------

....or a squirrel nut nest in your air cleaner LOL I once started my mustang up after it sitting all winter and it was doing something like your describing--I drove it figuring it would correct and was from sitting--got smoke coming from under the hood--stopped--looked---air filter holder was on fire.... it was packed solid with burning acorns! LOL They hung the burnt air filter up on the wall at the car parts place for a long time with a sign saying this is what happens when you don't change your filter LOL
