Default little problem

So I have a '97 4.0L, today I was driving home from work and had no other choice but to hit a huge puddle because there was another car coming the other way. I made it through fine but right after I made it through my truck died. Start back up and was a little rough at idle. So I limped it home ( about 2 miles) and after about the first mile it seemed to be okay until I gave it some gas. When it revs to around 3000 rpms it feels like its going to die out. Any ideas on why its doing this? My best guess is the distributor cap got wet?

Let it dry out for a little while and see what happens. I think you'll be OK once everything drys out. I doubt it is the distributor cap....you would be having more issues than issues as specific RPMS.

When "it feels like it is going to die" do the RPM's suddenly drop? If so, do they remain constant after you let off the throttle? What does the truck do in N at idle?

It has been sitting for about 2 hours now. Seems to be idling fine. And in p/n it revs fine but when I drive it, when I hit around 3000rpms it acts like its dieing and drops to around 2000rpms. And if I let off it feels fine again. It seem to drive fine at lower rpms but when I give it some gas it does that. When I restarted it right after I hit the puddle it sounded like it was misfiring a little bit but stopped after I drove about 100ft down the road

----------

I can go take a video and upload it to youtunb and post it if that would help

I would be curious to watch the video. Was the puddle that big where it soaked the entire engine? Is there any gear relation to the RPMs dropping? Is your CEL on?

Okay I got a video and I will post it here in a little bit, but I figured it out. Somehow water got into my airbox and soaked the filter. For somereason I wanted to check
the filter and when I opened the case a bunch of water dumped out and there was still water in the box when I took out the filter. So I cleaned it all out and I had an extra fram high flow filter in my garage so I installed that and everything is normal again.

----------

Okay I guess the video file got messed up somehow, but here are some pictures.
This is the water that dumped out of the air box when I opened it.

this is the inside of my airbox with water still inside.

And this is the filter. It was so wet when I stood it up it started to collapse.

Haha it wasn't a little bit of water. I went back and the puddle was smaller than when I hit it, it was about 2.5 ft deep. Im guess it was about 3 feet deep when I hit it(at 40 mph by the time I slowed down some) And I don't really plan to go in many holes at the mounds, im mainly going to hang with my buddy who is on his 2 weeks leave from the army, he has a colorado and want to try out my new camera and take some pictures,

Glad you figured it out....you might want to check the air filter housing because that should not have taken in that much water.

Just for future reference, your truck does not have a distributor cap
