Default 4.0 OHV Rear main seal question.

Is the rear main seal on the OHV a one piece or a two piece? Can you access it from dropping the pan or do you have to take apart the engine and the transmission?

Got a hell of an oil leak coming from the rear of the block and need to nip it in the bud.

Jimmeh you just rebuilt the engine right? did you happen to use the Felpro 2 piece/rtv lower intake manifold gasket?

is so look on the back of the block if the oil looks like it is coming from high on the motor almost like valve cover leak but the valve covers are dry. its that felpro gasket, I had the same problem go to the dealer and order the ford one piece gasket and it will solve the problem. you just need to put a drop of RTV on the corners of the gasket at the block and head.

you mean OHV right?

Lol, yeah I meant OHV. Had a long day yesterday.

Thanks for the reply Zach! My lower intake gasket was actually a one piece gasket. The upper intake had two of the same, but I only used one. After looking around in the engine bay and between the firewall and the engine, there is some old oil from an old leak I had, but it's nothing like whats coming off the back and bottom of the engine. It had leaked here when it was running a few years ago but it wasn't nearly as bad as it is now which is why I think it's that rear main seal. I was talking with my dad about it and after he looked around, he thinks the same thing. He's not a certified Ford mechanic or anything, but he has been fixing cars for his entire life so I think I can trust him, lol.

I think I will pop that intake off and have a look though, because it really isn't that big of a deal, and I think I might have missed a vacuum line somewhere anyway. If I can get the upper intake off, I can get a better look at the lower part and see what's going on, plus there's that extra gasket.

ya just thought I would ask because I swore it was rear main till i really started looking and it turned out to be that lower intake manifold after re-installing the ford gasket everything is dry.

if its rear main seal you have to pull the trans sadly

Yeah, I figured as much, just wasn't sure if it was a one piece or not. When I asked the parts store guy on the phone, he had no idea but when I went there today one of the kids there told me it was a one piece.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on that intake though. When it was leaking on yours, did it only leak out of the back, or was it also leaking around the sides?

the back and slightly on the the front but mostly back of the motor, it made the trans all wet also it was a pretty good leak. when I took the intake off you could see how the RTV didnt seal. there was tons of it but it seemed to crack.

yep their one piece seals ive replaced mine 2 years ago.. if you get the one from ford it comes with a metal ring that gets installed onto the crank something about a tsp on it that was their fix.. any way i didnt use the ring just slaped the gasket back in their and put the trans back in.

And you've had no problems since? They didn't say anything about that ring, just the gasket.

Hmm just replaced my intake gaskets, now I have (what I thought) was a rear main leak. Guess I'll have to tear into the intake again ahh

Which gaskets did you replace?

So I priced out that gasket today at Ford, just to make sure I know what the pay check will go towards (just in case). I sure as hell hope it's my rear main seal, lol! $78.02 from Ford. I'll get it if it ends up being that gasket that's causing my leak though. I was going to check it out today, but ended up working longer then I expected, and didn't feel like doing anything else when I got home. I've got the next 4 days off, though, so I'll at least get the rear main seal in (either way, I know that bitch is leaking).

Went ahead and pulled my upper intake off so I can see a little better. I'm not seeing any oil coming from the back of the intake manifold, and my hand is coming back "clean" after checking the back of the valve covers and manifold. There is some old ass oil caked on the back of the motor which leads me to believe that it did leak from there before (probably before I bought it).
