Default Engine Swap... what fun!

Hey guys,

Suffice to say... my 2000 4.0/auto 4x4's motor is on its last leg. I don't really think it's worth rebuilding it, so I've been looking for a good replacement. I found this '97 4.0 on ebay:

and this '01 :

I really don't know much about this kind of thing, so I'll turn to the experts. Would either motor fit my 2000?

the 01 is your closest bet. rangers changed after 97 so im not sure if it will fit, it probably will but the better bet would be the 01. it might be a SOHC whereas i think you have an OHV 4.0L.

most states from my understanding require that a swapped engine be from the same year or newer, so i'd go with the SOHC from 01.

Thanks for the input guys. I found another possibility...

Another noob question... is there any difference between the 4.0L from my 4x4 and this 4.0 from a 4x2?

I would try to stay in the 98-2000 year range to make it easy. I am not sure of the changes on older motors and a sohc (01 & newer) isn't worth the trouble to swap in

Alrighty... I've pretty well settled on this engine. Called the dealer selling it and it is a 4.0 with a 4wd auto tranny.

I know the engine itself is compatible, but a local salvage yard said that the transmission would not be. Anyone know about that? I was hoping to use the tranny also, but I'd hate to pay for it if I won't be able to.
