AC stalls engine when it cycles on
Hi everyone, newbie here. I have an 03 Ranger Edge with a 4.0 V6. When the AC compressor cycles on the motor almost dies which causes the compressor to cycle off immediately. If i give it a little gas (hold idle speed up) it will cycle on and off normally. Is there some kind of soleniod or switch that compensates for the AC compressor load that is not working?

Re: AC stalls engine when it cycles on
maybe your clutch is starting to lock up, putting to much load and slowing the crank down cause it to stall...?

Re: AC stalls engine when it cycles on
The clutch locking up wouldn't stall the engine, it would just keep it from disengaging which isn't a problem. But if the pulley itself is seizing or the compressor is starting seize up, that would do it.

Or, even simpler, the Idle Air Control valve. The last time my IAC crapped out, I had the same symptoms. Every time the A/C cycled on, the idle would dip to 300 RPMs. When the A/C cycled off, the idle would raise back up to normal.

That is exactly the same symptom I am having. Where is the IAC and is it a difficult part to replace?

Ah yes. Duh. The computer "throttles up" so to speak to compensate for the added load of the compressor. It does that using the IAC. If the IAC is fubar, well you get the idea.

Re: AC stalls engine when it cycles on
The IAC is around the throttle body. Two bolts hold it on. Takes about 1 minutes to pull it off. Autozone has them for $45 w/ 2 year warranty. But, if you have more dough, go to Ford, the smaller part store ones don't have a good rep for lasting.
Go here for a pic of what it looks like.

Re: AC stalls engine when it cycles on
Thank you so much for the repies everyone! I will go to Ford tomorrow and buy one of these things and give it a try. In case you were wondering, I live in Arizona and I have actually NEEDED to run the AC lately (in January!) because it has been warm here. That's how I noticed the problem, lol. Thanks again everyone!

Re: AC stalls engine when it cycles on
I replaced the IAC with a brand new one from Ford and it didn't fix it. I ended up taking the truck to the local Ford dealer and it turned out to be a reflash of the computer. According to the tech it needed an update (not a TSB) to the computer and it certainly did the trick. The truck runs perfect now, smoother than ever actually.

Re: AC stalls engine when it cycles on
Congrats on the easy fix MassRanger. The reflash @ the dealer cost me $70.00 but it made my truck run so good it was worth it. By the way, does anyone know what causes an IAC and mass air to get dirty and nasty? Mine were both clean before I developed this problem so does it have anything to do with what kind of gas you use? I have always used nothing but Chevron gas and as I said the IAC and mass air were very clean inside.

Re: AC stalls engine when it cycles on
My 1993 Ranger 4.0 would stall at a red light, but not all the time. I put the OB-I tester on it and got all kinds of weird codes, like the Oxy Sensors were running lean. I cleaned the idle control valve, but it did not look like it was all that dirty. That's when I noticed a missing cap on a vacuum line beside the firewall. After putting on a new cap, it ran fine. Apparently it caused a multitude of erroneous error codes. I hope this helps someone.
