Default Tranny question...

What would be a good manual tranny for a 4.0 SOHC? I was going with a 5 speed automatic, but I found out very quickly that my mom has no intention of driving a t-bucket, L.O.L. So I'll be using a manual tranny instead which is what I wanted to use to begin with. So if anyone can give me this info it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance,

About the only option you have for factory fitment is M5OD-R1HD. Apparently Mustangs have T-5 behind the 4.0L SOHC. Other than that, I can't think of anything else that would work reliably. 2.9L TK and FM series 5 speeds would come close, but epic waste of time to use something like that.

Auto PCM will need changed out to manual. I am not sure specifically what will need to change with the main harness, though - but auto trans is computer controlled. Big change, but manuals are all around better than automatics as far as economy and performance.

Thanks Pete. But I did forget to mention the fact that it will be a carbed engine which is my fault there. T-5 you say would be a good choice right?

I don't know a whole lot about the later SOHC Mustangs, but from what I could find from a search they have T-5s (or some variant of). It would work with both OHV and SOHC, but 1 bolt will be off for the OHV.

M5OD-R1HD is not a bad transmission, but either one might give you a different gear set that might be more ideal for what the truck will be used for and your final gearing output. (Eg, the M5OD-R1HD is probably geared more for truck use, and T-5 car use, but not sure where to find that data, it's probably is out there somewhere though).

And the M5OD-R1HD would be a factory fit, some modifications may be required for the T-5. Know in V8 swaps they are not hydraulic, so a slave cylinder must be adapted to the side of the transmission and stock Ranger clutch hydraulics are hooked into the new slave (and that might not even be the case). But if it's possible on a V8 swap, no reason I can think of that it wouldn't work, unless they've made the later T-5s with some kind of computer control (?)

Will be interesting to see this contraption you are building. Hopefully someone will fill in the blanks! This stuff isn't cheap enough for me to afford yet... LOL

Thanks Pete. It will be a scratch built T-bucket.
