Default 2002 4.0 SOHC Rattling need help!

Alright my 4.0 SOHC has been rattling like crazy lately. Almost every time I start it up is rattles pretty bad until it idles down, and usually rattles before and during shifting? Oil was changed about 1,500 miles ago, I can't remember the exact type all i can remember is that it was for high mileage vehicles (truck just hit 165,000 miles) Any ideas?

I am not sure but your year 4L had timing chain tensioner problem, has this been addressed?. If it rattles during shifting could be on of your trans mount? I just throwing that out there.

Yea I read about that timing chain deal on a few other sites. It rattles just before the shift and a little bit into it

you probably need to replace the cam chain tensioners. they bolt in to the block one up front by the thermostat housing for the left bank, and one by the rear passenger side spark plug for the right bank.

they are tensioned by oil pressure and spring loaded. after time the springs wear out, and cant hold tension until oil pressure builds in the engine. the front one is usually first to fail because its the last area in the engine to get oil, and it drains from there faster after shutdown.

the explorer forums have all kinds of info on this job.

i had this same problem on a 2002 explorer with the 4.0L its the tentioner.... it rattles in the upper RPM band right before you shift and then it goes away until you hit a certain RPM again.. just from experiance they are a pain in the ass to swap out.. you will have to pull the motor and then you can work at it.. its a ton of work and alot of tools are needed.. plus a timing light.. did ford ever fix this problem??

thats because the front external tensioner like i talked about before has gravity helping oil stay near it, allowing it to keep/build oil pressure faster upon startup.

these symptoms are indicative of a failed primary timing chain tensioner, TSB 04-15-4
it rattles between approximately 2500 to 3000 rpm if this is the case.

if the op says it rattles while shifting, it is because of the style of driving. the truck isnt shifting up until inside the 2500-3000rpm range, thus the rattle is audible before and during the shift until the rpms come back down in the next gear.

the components associated with this tsb/issue are not related to the external tensioners, which are 99% of the time the cause of the idle rattle and the rattle/buzz right after releasing the key to start the engine.

I did a quick temporary fix today of putting some SAE 30 oil in it along with some lucas oil treatment and parked it on a downward slope. Took it for a drive and the rattling was barely noticible.

My '02 4.0L makes a rattling right after being started if the engine is cold but if I run it like 5 miles and restart it, it doesnt rattle. Also when idle in park, my RPM will drop from 1000 to around 500 almost like it wants to stall and I can here a tick....are these all signs that I need cam chain tensioners replaced?
