Default hard starting

i have a 2005 4.0 V-6 with a starting problem. it take 2 to 3 cranks to start and it seems to be getting worse. i have changed the fuel filter and that is it. it shows no check engine light, and still gets 20 plus mpg. no loss of power, and runs fine when running. is this something a full service shop can find, or does it have to go to a dealer. i am 75 miles from a dealer. any help or advice would be appreciated !!!!

Hey blockbuster,

Check out the other couple of threads on starting issues. Sounds like you may have the same problem. I have changed the MAF, IAC sensor, have a new fuel filter etc.

The possible answer seems to be the fuel check valve, which is part of the fuel pump assembly, but there has not been a definitive answer. I wish a Ford mechanic would post a response.

Anyway, if the tank has to be dropped or the bed removed to change the pump, I am probably not going to do that myself. It may mean a trip to the dealer if I decide it is worth it.

My truck starts after about 2 or 3 taps on the starter and runs fine after it starts. Sounds just like yours. Mine is a 2005 Ranger also with 4.0l V6. Kind of frustrating.

blockbuster,

Don't know if you have been back on the forum, but I have found some more information in the meantime.

The fuel pressure regulator/check valve (likely the cause of all this) is part of the fuel pump assembly. By turning the key to the "run" position, you activate the fuel pump for 2 seconds. So, I click mine to "run" 4 or 5 times to prime the system and then hit start. Seems to work everytime so far.

I also replaced the fuel pump relay and put on a new fuel filter even though the one on the truck had less than 10,000 miles on it. I am down to the pump if this continues. I am running more Techron through it as suggested in another thread so we will see.

If you decide to replace the pump yourself, be aware that there are 3 or 4 different pumps depending upon your engine and wheelbase. I may take mine into the dealer even though I know the price will be outrageous.

To replace the pump you have to either remove the bed or drop the tank to gain access. Too much fun.

i'm having the same issue as you, lbvluesboy, but mine is an 05 3.0. my fuel filter was just replaced this past weekend, next is the fuel pump relay. i only run chevron gas, so i don't think adding more techron will help me.

I run Chevron gas too so I have a feeling the additional Techron system cleaner is probably not going to do much.

I guess checking the pressure after the first crank would be helpful. Just need some specs. I think I have a fuel pressure gauge around here somewhere..........

yeah i'm going to take my readings too, see what i can find out. when i cycle the pump to prime it, i can tell that pressure is building up after each time cuz the noise of the pump changes. it goes from high pitched and gets progressively lower.

I just posted my own thread basically saying the same question about my 99' 4.0 4X4... should have snooped around a bit first haha. Imma try to prime my pump in the morning and see if that helps. Will update my situation asap. Thanks!
