Default Cat Converters?

Anyone tell me why on my 02 Ranger they have 4 cats on it?
What would it hurt if I removed the two small front ones on the exhaust drops?

why is there 4 cats on your truck? the stupid goverment makes all car manufacturers put emmission crap on all cars and trucks.

before you take them out check and see if your state has emmission regulations for inspection. if so, then youll have to keep them on. if not then you can take them off. (my state, west virginia does not have any regulations).

then once theyre off the o2 sensor will read that there is a malfunction with the cat and it will throw a code (prob check engine light). get yourself a "spark plug non-fouler" from advance or auto zone. drill the center out a little. take the o2 sensor out and screw it into this non-fouler thing. then put both back into the pipe. it should keep the o2 sensor out of the exhaust enough to make it think that everying is ok with the cats.

Here in Colorado when you get the E-Test the testers just glance under the vehicles with a mirror to see if the the cat is on there or not, I highly doubt they know how many each vehicle has from the manufacturers. I do know this though in the 4 years I have had this ranger each year it gets tested the testers think something is not right due to it burning so clean it barely registers anything.

yes, darn that stupid government for keeping unneeded pollutants out our air!

...

Depends on your state whether you need cats or not. Some states will use a "sniffer" while others do a visual inspection. Removing cats will more than likely throw a code if there is an 02 sensor downstream of the cat. Do not expect any performance increase by removing them.

As long as you have another planet picked out to move to after you've trashed this one, it would probably OK.

I would leave the cats on there. Modern converters do little to restrict the exhaust system and you have little, if any gain removing them. There is also the whole not passing emmissions testing thing to worry about.
