If the valve covers are too dirty to see what is stamped on it then look at how the belts are arranged and then look at the sticker on the frame. What year is the truck?

Look at the 8th character of the VIN number. If it's an "E" it's a 4.0. If it's "U" it's a 3.0.

That is if it is an 01 or newer. If the truck is 00 or older, a 4.0 will be an "X" in the 8th spot. The 3.0 letter is the same "U" regardless of year I think.

Don't forget it can have a "V" also. If it has a "V" its a 3.0L flex fuel.
