Default bouncin oil pressure

The danger ranger (1994 4.0 OHV 4x4 automatic) has had weird oil pressure readings. According to the OEM gauge anyways. It only does this when in drive at idle, no other time, no other gear or throttle position. The needle bounces. ill post a link to my youtube vid and you can see what you guys think. At first i thought blockage, dying oil pump, or spun bearing but other than the oil pressure gauge i have no other symptoms. perhaps just gauge? it was doing this for about a week until i took er out and beat the **** out of it in the mud two days ago and i havent had a problem since

Oil pressure is nothing to take lightly. My 2002 3.0 acted the same way because it has a pressure switch for the gauge that went bad. I installed a psi gauge when I replaced the switch.

Two things.

1) The gauge isn't a gauge. There is a pressure SWITCH that closes at 7psi (or is it 9?). There is a resistor on the circuit board in the instrument cluster that provides the ohms required to center the needle. So the needle really only has two settings. Nothing which indicates anything less than 7psi and middle which indicates anything more than 7psi. yes, this is retarded. Ford did this so people don't see fluctuations and stop bothering the service places about it.

2) Either you do have a low RPM oil pressure problem, or your oil pressure switch is toast. Replace the oils pressure switch, it costs like $5. If the problem goes away, super. If not, you have a problem.

You can replace the oil pressure switch with an oil pressure sensor from a different ford vehicle. Then you open the instrument cluster and bypass the stupid resistor. Normal gauge will result.

so did you get the problem fixed?? and just for a rule of thumb for every 1000 RPM's make sure you get 10psi of oil pressure.. thats what we used when i worked at the dealership
