Default Shift on the Fly 4x4 99 Ranger

Ok guys, sometimes the 4x4 works, other times it doesnt. I cant tell you why or whatever, I replaced the left front hub because it broke a while back when I blew a tire and had to change on the road. What causes the 4x4 not to engage when you click it over? It hasnt worked really well since I got the truck from my dad, who said it worked when he bought the truck? Whats the cause? if any?
