Default I have an 88' 4 wheel drive ranger with a 2.9, will a 4.0 fit?

Hi I'm driving around a great truck but it's gettin kinda old so I wanna put a new motor in it, I was thinkin about the 4.0 but i'm open to anything. I need to tow with it and later on I'll do some gas mileage saving upgrades so it's not a big concern of mine, and I don't wanna put a 302 or a 351 in because that would take a longer time and I need to get it done asap cuz I can't have my truck sown for too long, have to drive to work everyday

Yes you can throw a 4.0l in it. I would recommend if your going to be pullign with it later is to pick up a 4.9l straight six from a F-150 and throw that in there. I have seen everything from 302, 351, 300 straight six, and even a V6 Diesel motor in these rangers. You might have to do a little modification to the wheel wells and suspension to handle the increased weight, and buy an adapter for the transmission but it will do it.

Now you're an expert on engine swaps when this was your resume last week?

Don't put a 4.9 in it, that's retarded. The 4.0 will fit just fine. I do not know all the specifics of it, but it is a rather normal swap on the older style Rangers. Insert a sig so people have a better idea of what truck you have and it's specs. That way we can help you out a little more. If they don't have the info on here to swap the 4.0 in go over to therangerstation.com they have a whole lot of technical how-tos that work great.

does anybody have an idea of how to get some cheap power out of the 2.9? i started lookin around and for the whole swap it would be around a grand to do it my self so i think i'm going to have to stay with the engine i have and just make so upgrades, any ideas would be helpful

Look at typical HP curves for any performance parts. You get the gain at wide open throttle near redline RPM. What is it that you are doing under those conditions and coming up short?
