Default How reliable is the SOHC 4.0L V6?

my decision on buying the ranger was from a couple friends who have them and never have any issues with them other than brakes and tires and other maintainence things.

my question is how stoudt are the 4.0L and the 5 speed automatic behind them?

i know this engine/tranny has been around at least 10 years so it has to be refined by now...

The reliability (from what I have read from reputable magazines and also owners of the SOHC) is excellent it regularly receives top marks being able to run with only routine maintenance. Although it does take a hit for delivery subpar fuel economy and perfromance in comparison to modern v6s it still is one of the front runners in terms of reliability and simplisity. I am an import guy but after research I deemed this Engine reliable enough for me to invest in a ranger and I love it.

I abuse the crap outa my 4.0 SOHC, and she runs great after 130,000 hard miles. I have the stick though, so I can't say about the auto.

The SOHC has proved to be a very reliable engine since its beginning. early years had timing chain tensioner issues but that has since been fixed in the later models. the auto trans can also prove to be reliable IF cared for and not abused. regular fluid and filter changes and not over heating the trans will net you a good life from that trans.

yeah i bought this because of reliability.

as far as being low in performance aspect i think my truck hauls ass when i need it to!
my automatic shifts nice and firm and if i get on it, it does throw me back a little (nothing like my 2011 300hp v6 mustang) but its nice.

and yeah MPG does suck lol im getting like 12.5 city, but if shes gonna treat me well (im a maintainence freak so she don't have to worry) i dont mind the MPG hit.

better than driving a smug ridden hybrid.

Lol my truck hauls a** too lol its just in comparison to the toyota 4L (236 HP and like 260 lb Ft) and the Nissan 4L (263 HP and like 280 lb ft) our 207 Hp and 238 lb don't even come close lol. Heck new 4 cyl coming out are maknig the same performance as our v6 now.

ive never really thought the SOHC lacks performance, ive always been impressed with it actually, especially towing. ive beaten the piss out of my truck between the regular towing, off roading, and heavy foot driving and its held up very well considering. i always treat it to regular fluid changes and good oils and such and it returns the favor.

I heard good things about that motor too, just that the manual tranny was like shifting a semi truck

Ive ran a 2002 4.0 SOHC in my Desert race truck for a few years. Constantly at high rpm. Never have had an engine failure of any kind. I just run the basics with some Juanco (Fiberwerx) wiring and some JBA headers. As far as the tranny goes dont have an opinion because I run a C4.

^ Ya, that reminded me of the only problem with the SOHC. It's a screamer. I was disappointed as the lack of low end grunt relative to OHV motors, but all in all they're cammed like a truck motor so that helps.

I guess a suitable diff could resolve that issue.

Ya, like my freekin 4.10s? I'm just sayin, pushrods are better at low-end torque. I still prefer OHC for all the other benefits.

Haha! Ya, that'd give ya some torque! Just ignore the small fact you'd get 10mpg highway, and to out at 70mph.
