The powerband (according to Ford) actually differs depending on year. Every 2 or so years, they'd tweak it. That's why power numbers very as well.

i would like to see where you read that. to my knowledge the SOHC in the rangers have not changed in output since they started using them in 2001. the explorer and the mustang on the other hand have different output numbers than the ranger 4.0

heres a link to the ranger spec sheet on fordvehicles.com. the numbers listed for the 4.0 are the exact same as they were in 2002 when i bought my ranger.

I can only speak from my own experience, and to me, the 4.0 liter V6 has been ultra reliable.

Currently have over 450,000 km (about 270,000 miles or so) on the original engine and transmission (5 sp auto) with no major problems with either.

First two years of ownership, driving was about 75% to 25% city to highway - since then, it's been about 85 - 90% highway.

Most important thing, in my opinion, is to do the required maintenance, regularly - don't skimp/skip oil changes - done regularly on my truck every 5,000 km (about 3,000 miles), and transmission filter/fluid changes every 50,000 km or about 30,000 miles, like clockwork.

It will last if you look after it.

I love my 02 SOHC. The engine is a screamer with the 4.10 gearing, but if you plan on using it for towing, then it's great. It is dissapointing to only see 18 hwy mpg with a ranger, but then you realize it's pretty much unstoppable in any situation. the 5spd auto is a geared very well for this setup as well. It keeps the engine right in the power band at any given time. I personally like to stand on it at the lights and blow away the other traffic (no I don't race people, I just like the throwback accelleration with the 4.10s....hehehe)...

Yea the thing I dont like about the SOHC is inorder to work on the valve train u basicly have to pull the front clip off then the front of the motor apart talk about a major PAIN IN THE *SS

I did it myself cause a local shop wanted $700 Just to take the head off thats before they did any other work to acutally fix the promblem
