i know this engine/tranny has been around at least 10 years so it has to be refined by now...
I have had mine for over a year and knock on wood, its been great

i hear people say that alot but compared to my old OHV 4.0 rangers (93 5 speed with 3:73's and 96 auto with 4:10's) my SOHC (5 speed auto, used to have 4:10's stock) beats them both hands down in every way, including low end.

Well the numbers on SOHC are quite higher as well. It's simply an inherent trait of OHC vs OHV. The 4.0 SOHC is definitely a better motor though.

yeah im not knocking the OHV at all, they are great motors, but yeah i personally think the SOHC is better.

I like how smooth the power band is in the SOHC, it beats my brothers 2003 3.9 Magnum he had in his dakota.

Thats with a 9" and a 6.0 gear.

No problem.

The only thing I dislike is where peak torque comes in; its awfully high up for a truck. If it made peak torque between 2500-3000 it would be MUCH better in just about all aspects, as rarely do I ever get up to 4k RPM's,

A tune won't be able to affect an engine's powerband. A lot of things go into making an egine function the way it does and where and how much power it puts down. Only thing that would be helpful would be higher gears, such as 4.10's which will help you get into your powerband earlier by accelerating quicker, but even with my 4.10's under normal or hard acceleration I usually shift under 3000 RPM

The SOHC Actually makes it peak torque at 3000 RPM and the OHV makes its peak at 2750 RPM
