Default Mechanic stumped!

I have a 2004 4x4, 4.0 v6 ranger. About 6 weeks ago I stared it up and it was very rough with the engine light on. The code said #1 Cyl miss fire.
I've had it in to my mechanic 4-5 times since and the engine light is still on with the same code. To make a long story short this is what has been done.
New Plugs
New Wire
New Injector on the #1 Cyl.
Compression test, ok.
New Coil
Checked for manifold leaks etc.
Changed the plug and injector with another cyl. didn't help.

Has anyone any ideas about what the problem could be? Mechanic thinks maybe computer module? Some other wiring? Local Ford dealer also has no idea.

When driven for a while it's is almost normal, almost no roughness?

Appreciate any suggestions, so far I've put $1000 into it with no luck.

Pat.

Have you checked for intake leaks?

Hi, Thanks for the replies.

Yes they have checked all the wires, and for intake leaks everywhere.
That's the problem they feel they have checked everything. The mechanic I go to is good. I've used him for 10 years.
It goes back to him next week and he says he'll find the problem but I just figured someone here might have an idea.

Thanks.

Pat.

A faulty EGR valve may cause random misfires. Have your mechanic pull of the EGR vacuum line from the valve and see if the misfire stops.

Hi,

Thanks I will do that although it's not random? It's always on cyl. 1 even if they switch plugs, injector, wires etc?

What did the plug in the #1 cylinder look like when it was changed? Is it losing coolant, even a little bit? What was the actual pressure number on the number 1 cylinder?

Hi,

When the plugs were first changed there were all looking pretty bad..the mechanic said. But I could not say exactly if cyc. 1 was different than the others. Sorry.

I have seen coils go bad and only effect1 or 2 cylinders. There is a way to ohm them out to test in the manual.

Thanks for the replay. I know that this can happen and that I have a new coil (which doesn't mean it couldn't still happen). I hope they have checked that and will check.

On another site someone with a similar problem ended up needing a new value spring on that cylinder. The mechanic where I go actually mentioned that it could be that..I hope not.

Anyway I'll post when I have it back in next week.

Pat.

i thought a sticky valve might be the issue as well; could be as simple as a new valve spring or it could have rolled a cam lope.

You could be right. Like I said I'll report back when I have it checked.
Thanks

A valve or spring problem should show up on the compression check shouldn't it?
