I have tried higher octane gas from Shell and Chevron, but It doesnt correct itself.
What could be causing it? Does it sound like im in big trouble???

Yep. It sounds like you either have an oil leak somewhere, or are extremely low on oil. You may have caused some cylinder head damage somewhere too. That pinging you hear is your valves hitting the piston head. I would recomend Lucas Upper Cylinder Lube, to clean your fuel system out and lubricate your valvetrain until you can get to a shop and check out those cylinder heads and pistons to see if there's any damage done to your internal engine components.

What makes you think he is losing oil and has physical damage??

That's what mine was doing when it dropped a rod a couple of years ago. Then I went through Geico's lame assed mechanical breakdown dept. After their incompetance and 3 engines later the problem was solved. If he aint leaking oil somewhere, then it's low due to excessive consumption for some reason or another.

But he said oil level is fine and he changes it ever 3k. I think an oil problem THAT BAD would be more obvious. I think he's got a timing for ignition issue.

I didn't see that in his posts on here, but if that's the case then I'd say you're right about that. Could there also be an injector problem by any chance?

Re: Loud Pinging/rattleing noise when under heavy acceleration, hills...
i wood have to agree that it is probably ingntion timing is off . and is lack of power is because of his knock senser trying to stop the engine from taring it to paces . try seating the bace timing and go from there if thats not your issue work your way out . and remember air fuel spark all 3 need to be in order to run at 14.7 :1

yep that was what I was thinking after I found out that he changes his oil on a regular basis.

Re: Loud Pinging/rattleing noise when under heavy acceleration, hills...
It sounds like a classic case of carbon knock since it stops when the throttle is backed off. Hence my response to fill the tank up with fresh gas and pour in two bottles of Chevron cleaner.
In cases of extreme carbon build up the engine really needs to be MotorVac'd which isn't terribly expensive.

Re: Loud Pinging/rattleing noise when under heavy acceleration, hills...
Ok. So here's where we're at and what we need to know still...
- When did this start and how? Has this been happening gradually over time or did this just start out of the blue?
- If it's been getting gradually worse over a long time, carbon is a good possibility. Chevron with Techron is the generally accepted good shit. Seafoam will help a lot too.
- If it just suddenly happened one day, then changes are it is not carbon and cleaning it won't do anything. Something timing or ignition related probably bit the dust.

This started about 6 months ago, a few weeks after I bought the truck. I got the truck with blown head-gaskets and cracked heads. I put new heads and gaskets in it. Everything has ran great except for this one problem.
It has been happening over a period of time, not just one day out of the blue.
Also sounds like the engine misses a little when idleing...

spark-knock! mine did the same. i just put new plugs in it and it corrected the problem

Re: Loud Pinging/rattleing noise when under heavy acceleration, hills...
I had that same noise.. at about 2500 rpm.. tried changed oil and tried different oils... on the spark plugs i only use autolites in all my fords, but back to the noise.. i could not get mine to stop making that noise so i pulled the motor.. upon teardown found, pistion slap on all 6 and crank was hurt some.. machine work and new pistions and put back together and is now runing like a champ

Re: Loud Pinging/rattleing noise when under heavy acceleration, hills...
Now that you're providing a bit more history, I'm going to back off the thought that it's carbon buildup. There's no way you should have built up enough carbon in 6 months with new heads to cause knocking. Granted though, dumping Chevron cleaner into your system wouldn't have been a total waste. It's the best stuff on the market.
I'm thinking ignition related and possibly one or more bad plug wires if those have never been changed.
Piston slap perhaps, but the noise would happen whether it was under load or just being revved in the driveway. I would suggest revving the engine and see if the knocking occurs if you haven't done that.

I had a 93 XLT 4.0 and I had a rattling about to worry the hell out of me and a friend of mine looked under my truck and I had 2 broken welds on I think it was muffler braces. I broke the braces off and that ended my rattle.

Re: Loud Pinging/rattleing noise when under heavy acceleration, hills...
Sounds like a combination of bad fuel, some carbon build up, and also needs a tune up as well too. I'd pull the motor and tear it down and check everything out concerning your internal engine components. There may be a bit of slapping of the piston heads and valves going on. Especially after you just now informed us on head gaskets and new cylinder heads being installed. They weren't checked for proper clearance.
