I don't really think this is his problem as it would be more likely if his problem was no start.

Just for the record tho, it is very simple to change. It mounts just below the Harmonic Balancer to the passenger side of the engine. It is held on with 2 bolts and and the electrical connector. It helps to take the serpentine belt off some of the pulleys to gain some access to the bolts.

i have been getting the same noise in my 2001 4.0, nobody helped me because i didnt describe the noise as well as they wanted. with mine it is also right as it hits 2500 rpm but it is more of a light grinding sound... i am going to do a full tuneup soon and i already run fuel treatment and midgrade fuel every fill-up, and recently had my IAC cleaned and the valve replaced. im scared that its a more complicated problem than just a tuneup can fix. good luck though and please let me know if you find a solution

Check the fuel injector wiring connector at the injector, if any corrosion in there it can mess up the the amount of fuel injected ,ie, lean run condition, causing predetonation or ping, cleaning the connections on my old 2.3 made all the difference, it pinged from the day i bought it ten years ago and i did everthing known to man to fix it, i thought, until a buddy with a 5.0 mustang turned me on to the corrosion problem at the injector. I changed both fuel filters, cap rotor wires plugs, inspected fuel pump new eec module nothing changed until i cleaned the connections. i had to remove the top half of the intake manifold to gain access to the injectors but it wasnt a big deal. This can cause some really weird driveability problems codes etc good luck
