Volant Cold Air Intakes

I know this general topic has been discussed adnauseam but this design intrigues me because it adds the additional filter area in a still sealed box.

I am purely after mpgs. It looks like a 2-3mpg custom tune only means going from 15 to 16.5mpg and if there is ANY wind, my H/W mileage can actually be worse. I mean it's better under ideal conditions, no wind 68-70mph max, but I had a H/W test on my new custom tune and the wind was 25mph out of the south so going north I was helped by it and coming back hurt by it, fillled up and got 16.5mpg. My previous tank was 3/4 city 1/4 H/W and it was 16.5mpg - was just 15mpg prior to the SCT tune. This is just simply horrible. Though I never grew to like the truck, my GMC Canyon 4x4 would average better than 18 and would get 22/23 on the H/W. My V8 Sierra would do better than this Ranger.

So, looking to go ALL synthetic from the engine to the rear end.

I am considering this intake and perhaps a catback system as well.

Still think I've got an engine problem of some kind though to be this bad. My foot is not that heavy.

Yet, I've seen others posting 12-14mpg. Guess I should have done my homework before buying this but I just assumed a 6 cylinder compact would have respectable mileage especially with an additional gear.

The MPG could definitely be better. However adding that useless shiny tube will not improve anything including the MPG. Neither will the catback exhaust. You should not be expecting more than 18-19. And that 2mph lacking can be attributed to a lot of things. Honestly the biggest thing is driving style.

Well, that's just it. You aren't going to find much better driving style.

So, if 16.5mpg is all I'm going to get even with a custom tune, this truck is gone.

That Volant says it is for the 3.0L, not sure if the 4.0 and 3.0 have interchangable intakes but I'd doubt it. 16.5 is pretty good for a 4.0. I get between 15-17 with my 4.0, 5spd manual.

Looks like a more expensive version of the stock intake. The only thing you will gain is a thinner wallet. MPG is all about keeping the truck properly maintained and driving style. You do not bolt on MPG.

Clearly not as tired as I should be. For some reason I care too much about seeing people waste their money on useless products that don't work.

Volant doesn't have a picture for the 4.0 so I just pasted that one. Figured it would be similar.

I didn't like the open air design of the K&N and Airaid because of the risk of getting water or something else in it.

This thing is at least sealed while still maintaining the extra filter area.

And, like I said, if 16.5 is all I am going to yield out of this truck, it's gone, plain and simple. My post just put up on a vibration/growl I developed on the way home today probably means that something ain't right. Now the engine runs smooth, no missing, bogging, coughing, etc. but a vibration/growl means something ain't right and is not spinning as smoothly as it should which may adversely affect mpg.

It's just strange that some people swear by these things at others just swear at them.

What type off diff do you have. If you have the 4.10, youre screwed, might as well sell it like you said if MPGs are your concern. the 3.73 is slightly better on gas but not by much. Trade it in for 2wd Ranger with the 2.3L and 5 spd manual.

Everyone I have ever seen swear by them has yet to actually show any evidence of what they swear. There are however plenty of dyno tests and good old logic and science that to back swearing at them.

You bought a pickup truck. If you want super mileage, you bought the wrong vehicle.

Thats what i get normally in my ranger to. 15-17. unless im wheeling then it drops down to about 13 lol

get a f150, i have a 4x4 screw and get 15 -16 mpg, more power/room and just as good fuel milage
