Default Thinking of getting an FIPK intake from K&N

Does anyone have this intake on their 4.0 SOHC?

If so, would you recommend it as a great upgrade over the stock induction system? Some things I'm considering are:

-Improved throttle response
-Improved fuel economy
-Increased HP and TQ (whatever K&N rates the increase as)
-Better (louder sound)

This is the system: http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?Prod=63-1108
(I'm assuming there would be no difference from 2010 to 2011)

How much benifit do you actually get from this system? I've heard some people say don't bother with it because the power increase is so high in the RPM range that you'd never utilize it. I'm more concerned with fuel economy, and this being the case, would a simple K&N drop in filter be better than the entire intake system?

Help me weigh out the pros and cons of each so I can make a better decision.

Thanks, Andrew

You will see no nominal increases in anything in 99% of cases. To actually have the intake system give increases you would need head work, manifold work, a larger MAF housing. It will give you a filter that will last forever, more sound, and better underhood looks and some stickers. The stock airbox is cold air. A K&N drop in with the air silencer removal mod is a much cheaper option.

Agreed in a big, big way. That K&N CAI kit is indeed a waste of money. Can you please explain the air silencer removal to me a bit please? Some photos would be very appreciated to. I have never heard about this mod before concerning the air silencer. I have heard it mentioned but never seen it before.

How many threads have we seen on the CAI kit? everyone in here agrees that it's a waste of money. I really would love to see about the air silencer removal mod. That's got my interest peaked.

With the silencer box removed, the filter gets air from benind the right headlight, but without it does it just get air from the engine bay?

----------

Thanks for the help with this one guys. I had to ask simply to see if it was worth my money or not, and I guess with these particular vehicles, it doesn't make a big enough difference to justify buying one (unless you have that explorer express supercharger - those guys probably benefit more from one). That's good enough for me!

Well, I did the air box mod this morning since I was bored. I removed the snorkel and chamber that are supposed to reduce noise. I then took it for a drive, however, I did not notice any increase in intake noise, nor did I sense any improvement in power. Maybe a bit better throttle response but that's it. I'm guessing I can't hear any extra noise because of my exhaust being a little on the loud side.

The only thing I can guess is that the round snorkel that goes into the airbox is supposed to reduce turbulance of the incoming air so it has a straight shot up the ramp in the bottom of the box to the filter. I figured since it bottle necks like that, it also increases air velocity. (Think of trying to blow out a candle using a Mc Donald's straw verses a dryer vent hose)

I'm also a little worried that driving in the rain behind other cars may cause the filter to become damp if any water comes in from under the right headlamp, but I'll wait and see.

Going to try the throttle cable mod next and take up the slack in the cable with some zip ties, and I'll let everyone know how that goes. Also not anticipating any vast change in performance being that my truck is only 5 months old and no stretching of the cable is likely to have taken place.

Don't waste your money. I am selling mine after 6 months....I actually think I got worse mileage as I think it was running richer for some reason.

i did the airbox mod and K&N drop in. i like it, sounds beastly and i think its a little more responsive but im sure its just all in my head.

in mine i think the hole in the airbox is at the bottom so im not really worried about water.

I don't know guys got one love it sounds great throttle response is better and if you drive it like you own it and didn't steal it the gas mileage is better. With a little research you can see why they make a difference. Also keeping your truck tuned with good plugs and a clean gas filter helps. Air in proper burn and air out that is how motors work basically
