Default coolant temp fluctuations

today i drove home my 95 ranger xlt with the 4.0 that i just purchased. as i was driving i was glancing at the gauges, just to make sure everything was ok. as i was cruising down the thruway i saw the coolant temp gauge moving oddly. it would slowly move from about 1/4 of the way up to 1/2, then back down to 1/4 and over and over. it does this once its up to temp at idle as well, but not as drastic of changes. i'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. the check engine light is also on, and the previous owner told me it had something to do with the egr system.

i know everyone is probably going to tell me to search, but i think this is the easiest way to get an answer.

thanks in advance!

Weak thermostat would be my guess.

We don't tell members to go search!
I agree with Snowball, plus it could be a thermostat that is in the 165 to 180* range and it is going bad.
Keep watching the gauge, if it goes up and doesn't go back down, get it parked.

i agree with above statements i'd just replace the thermostat as soon as i could before it pukes on the side of the road somewhere and leaves you stranded.

I think you and bultacco40 have something in common, maybe you should read his post.
