Default Hoping This '04 Motor Will Harvest Me Some Horsepower

Background:
1995 Ranger, swapped out the 2.3 for a 96 4.0. Got EVERYTHING needed from the donor vehicle.
BROKE OFF the nose of the crankshaft, while dropping it in. Yeah, I'm an idiot...

About $200 gets me a crank kit, probably gaskets, too, from O'Reilley's.

A guy's offered me a 4.0 from a 2004, for $150- but what vehicle, I don't know yet. Sent him an email, have not heard back, yet.

Googling reveals the 04 Mustang and Explorer have 210 HP, the 04 Ranger 206. Close enough, eh? The 96 Ranger has about 160, I see. So, from that standpoint, it would appear to be a nice upgrade. But wait...

He says he has a long block. So, probably no fueling assembly, and probably no ignition parts. None of those parts from an OHV motor will even FIT on an SOHC motor, will they? And even if they did fit, they would not function properly, right? I gotta maintain emissions, here in Atlanta, BTW. Would the only solution to this apparent problems be to get the entire motor, including ECM? Will I be able to use the underhood wiring harness that came from the 96 Ranger? (I kept both the 95 and the 96 underhood harnesses; the 4.0 hooks up to the original 95 wiring harness, but I have not started the motor since it's been out of the 96.)

Does it matter what transmission? I have a AOD in the Ranger, will it bolt up to his motor? Function properly?

THIS JUST IN: Just saw a post in a Mustang forum, which says the 04 mustangs had OHV motors. True?

One more thing- I came across a set of flat-top pistions for $150. Mentioned them in another post on this forum. Would they be good for either motor? What might the compression ratio be?

Thanks.

This forum is full of nightmares about the right engine in the right truck with the right computer generating error codes that don't make sense to all the king's horses and all the king's men. Think about that for a minute.

Simply do a google advanced search of this forum for "Engine Code" and you will quickly find about 1500 results. Look through a few and you will soon see numerous unanswered questions. If the experts on this board can't answer these questions, where would some poor guy be if he starts mixing and matching parts from different models, years.

Glad to be of service.

What i'm not understanding is why the O.P. is considering swapping another engine in, when all he did was break the nose of the cam off? Is it because he can't remove the cam due to the nose being gone?

I think he wants to get the more powerful motor rather than fixing the one he has. I'd say its waay too much work for what you get. computers wouldn't talk, you'd have to buy all the other parts for the engine, and the trans wouldn't play nice with the newer engine, even if it did mount up.

Turned out to be a sohc motor, so too much trouble for too little gain. Thanks, anyway.
