Default Ideal Shift Rpm for a SOHC?

What RPM ranger are these engines happiest at? 2000-3000rpm? The owner's manual is vague at best on shift points and wondered what RPM these engines prefer to avoid lugging or roaring.

I drive easy, so mine never breaks 2500, usually shifts at 2000. high rpms don't hurt them, though.

depends on your gearing. I have 4.10s and i shift at 2k rpm under normal driving, if accelerating onto a highway i let it climb to 2750.

that's a good point about the gearing. I'm in the same boat as you with the 4.10 axle. a 3.55 per the op's truck would probably need a few more rpms to be happy.

im in an auto but i like to keep the RPMs down, but having big tires makes my truck have to work harder to get up to speed, i think i let her shift around 2500-3k

I give mine a good spin at least once a week - 4000 or better getting on the freeway.
It roars like it doesn't like it but it pulls all the way up.

You have an OHV lol that is different then a SOHC. SOHC's love the rpm, the OHV's aren't as rev happy. They do however seem to put more torque down.

General rule on shifting, every 10 mph, or around 2500, even with the 3.55s. However having the taller gear you are going to want to wind it more to get to speed faster, especially on a SOHC. I do have an auto Ranger, but the GMC is a stick, and it's no different.

My 4.0 OHV manual I shift around 2500. My 4.0 SOHC auto shifts at about 2,200.

I've been shifting mine at 3000 RPM, I have 3.55:1 gears. Below 2000 rpm the engine feels like lugging. I wasn't sure on the what the usual operating range on this set-up was. The owners manual doesn't seem to be very helpful on this point.

the SOHC like RPM's, dont be afraid to let it breath a little.
