Talking Got a few questions for the ranger Guru's

i'll make this quick. Are headers worth it for increased power?.. are cool air intakes even worth it? and are intake manifolds worth it as well?.. and as i mean "worth it" i really mean to say, is the pro's list longer then the cons list.

THANKS!

cold air intakes are worthless. I don't think an intake manifold is going to get you far, either. these engines are pretty much good to go the way they were built. as for exhaust, I'm not sure.

I installed headers with no cat and a flowmaster 40. Free flow intake and a jet chip. It did seem to help. Not to mention it sounded mean as shit!

yeah I think it did, but its kinda like you need all three things done to see any increase, of course the next step would be to do some internal engine work. I had about $600 wrapped up into those things. I would do the same to my '01 and probably will in the future.

if you add a few other things like a reflash, bigger injectors, and catback, you will see maybe 20-30 hp.

The headers is what woke it up the most. Chips don't work, period. You need a tuner to see any results from the PCM. The headers are the most restrictive part of the exhaust, but they aren't too bad on the Ranger. With a full exhaust done and a tune I'd give you 3-5 rwhp or about 15hp at the crank.

Keep in mind that engines are basically air pumps so any performance gain by bolting on a cold air intake will be minimal without upgrades to the rest of the intake and exhaust sides of the engine. Bolting on just a set of headers won't do much as you'll still have air restrictions at the intake side and cat back in stock trim.

However a tuner will give you increased performance with stock components and give you the best bang for your buck.

Change the geometry of the throttle linkage so reduce the travel to 1/4" to WOT. Add a really weak throttle spring and you'll have to drive barefoot to keep the tires from breaking loose. Feel like 400 HP.
