Default Running at low RPM's?!?

Not to long ago my truck started doing this thing where when I start it up, it will start but barely stay running. My RPM gauge will read just above 0 and it acts like its going to stall but never does. It doesn't do this every time I start it, just maybe once a day. sometimes if I give it a rev it'll be fine but its just driving me nuts because its a pain in the butt. Anyone have any idea what might be going on and how much it will be to fix? I drive a 97 xlt manual if that helps any.
