serpentine belt replacement
I have not changed a serpentine belt yet in the 2004. In my Jeep there is a belt release bolt that I crank down with the breaker bar to realese the tension. Can someone let me know where this would be in my 4.0?
Thanx very much!!!!!!!

I usually rent the tool from autozone to make it a bit easier but all you do is crank down on the tensioner and the belt comes right off. Very easy to do.

Get a good belt so you don't have to worry about it too often in the future. The Goodyear Gatorback is a great belt.

Re: serpentine belt replacement
Does the air box have to come off in order to get enough room to get the 3/8 drive ratchet in the square hole of the tensioner? I'm doing this tonight and I want to remove as little as possible as I'm in a huge hurry tonight.
And PS... sorry for digging up an old thread... I was just using the search button and this is the only one that showed up that I could find for "04 Ranger Serpentine belt replacement"

Re: serpentine belt replacement
Shouldn't have to remove anything, from what I remember. I think it's just a simple (tight) fit, a little tension, and waa laa.

Re: serpentine belt replacement
Yea... so I did this last night.... I found it easiest to use my 3/8ths drive ratchet for the tensioner, pull back on it to remove tension but leave the ratchet in the tensioner hole, this way the tensioner doesn't go all the way up, and the ratchet keeps it from moving against the frame while I slipped the new belt on and into place.
Dealer wanted to charge 145$ to do the belt change..... what a rip... I did it for the cost of the belt at $40. And it only took me 15min to change out the belt and be on my way.
I could make a DIY with pictures if anybody wants it?

Re: serpentine belt replacement
Congrats! Now take that $105, and put it towards another DIY job on the truck.

Re: serpentine belt replacement
I had to take off my airbox which gave me enough room. I used a loaner Serp belt tool from auto Zone. Thinner than a ratchet.

Awesome, thank you very much. I'm going to probably go ahead and do it this weekend. I took a look at mine and it looks a little worn.

How many miles did you have when you changed the belt? I also have a 2004 XLT 4.0. I'm at around 93,000.
