FIXED!!!! thank god!! i checked the coolant in the reservoir, it was brown and kinda gunky, so i pulled the tank off, drained it, cleaned it out with a hose, filled it back up with coolant, then started the truck. it over heated a little, then went back down. so i went and loosened the radiator cap and release some of the pressure. went back and started it. and it stayed at normal temp. checked the radiator, filled it up. runs fine. not sure what caused it to over heat, but it runs fine now. thanks for the tips guys!

Don't be surprised. out of box t-stat failures happen more than you'd think. Though usually they stick open rather than closed.

Hey guys I'm having some 4.0 problems you may have some ideas about. Not overheating , ac working , vacuum actuator to heater core working , that air door behind the glove box is ok, upper left radiator hose hot, lower right radiator hose cold. Heater blowing cool air . That's a 08 Ranger . I'm thinking thermostat stuck open or air lock ? Should be to new for the heater core to be blocked ?

I'm thinking feel the radiator and heater hoses as it warms up to see if you are getting circulation to heater core. Control not opening?

Sounds like a stuck open t-state to me. You've checked everything else.

The heater core control is opening and I don't think I'm getting circulation , looking like thermostat / water pump . I'm going out now to try and bleed some air out .

It would help if you told us what year your truck is. The cooling system doesn't get "air locked" really. If you are low on coolant, thats just being low on coolant. And your coolant shouldn't be disappearing for that matter.

What you describe is either low coolant, a failing pump, or a stuck open t-stat. But the upper hose only being hot sounds like maybe the pump.

Sorry , guess I left out that its a 2008 Ranger 4.0 4x4. I let it run for about 35 minutes today with the cap off & the circulation didn't seem like much but its not overheating , heat gauge stops just short of midway . Unless the stat can stick partially open I believe I'm in for a pump ..

Just short of midway is correct. A 2008 water pump shouldn't be rotted out. Did the water in the radiator stay still until it warmed up (indicating the t-stat was closed) and then once it hit 190, it would start flowing.

that is extremely odd, you don't happen to have your warranty still do you?

Thank you for the help guys . Turned out to be a bad actuator inside the dash that opens one of the about 7 control flaps that lets hot air from the heater core box . $334.00 later , they had to remove the passenger side air bag to access it. The part itself was about $60.00.
