Looking for the best tuner for my Ranger! Need input.
I hear so many mixed reviews on tuners. Somebody hit me with the truth and your experiances..
If installed, is it going to set off my check engine light?
Will it help with mpg?
HP Increase?

I have my SCT X3 coming in today. I'll let you know how it goes.

Re: Looking for the best tuner for my Ranger! Need input.
SCT is my favorite
They have a few deferent tuners to choose from.
I would hit up their website and see if u got a dealer close by.
It wont set off ur check engine light. U can actually use them to read it and clear it.

Re: Looking for the best tuner for my Ranger! Need input.
I tried uploading my tunes today from my SCT and I got a code 1033. (low volts) and I tried hooking up a battery charger and checked the volts coming out and it still didn't work. Anyone know why?

Re: Looking for the best tuner for my Ranger! Need input.
I've yet to see any hard numbers on this forum (dyno, ET slips). Regarding those noticing big gains, smoothness etc, who wants to think, let alone admit, that they spent $$$ for something that does nothing. As far a gas mileage, Ford has every reason to tune for the best mileage they can get for a given situation without sacrificing reliability. The only thing a tuner can do to increase mileage is to lean the mixture which increases combustion temperatures. Not something I want.

i cant give you any dyno sheets or hard HP or TQ numbers but i can tell you that the $400 i spent on my SCT and custom tunes was one of my best investments when it comes to my ranger. this is the only bolt on mod besides the gears where i actually noticed a gain and it is a substantial gain. not only is the engine tuning optimized for use with regular 87 octane gas but also 91 octane if you wish to take advantage of the extra octane by adding timing to it. the tuning to the automatic transmission is what i love the most, no more slushy sloppy shifts, instead i enjoy firm quick shifts which dramatically reduce trans temps (verified with scanguage) as well as helping acceleration and towing. also the ability to calibrate your speedo and odo after re-gearing or going to larger tires is a plus as is the ability to read and clear trouble codes. I love the tuner in my ranger so much that i purchased one for my F-150 as well and i have experienced similar results. i suggest you do some research about programmers/ tuners because you are clearly mis-informed about them.

I would love to do some research. Do you know where there is any information? I still haven't seen any here. Changing shifting feel has no value to me. One needs higher compression ratio to take advantage of the anti-knock properties of higher octane fuel. Lower transmission temperature? If so, so what? Stock transmission temperature must be adequate, it's not unusual to see these trucks with 180,000 miles with no transmission work. Fixing problems that don't exist for $400 isn't my idea of value.

Well, Myself and many others enjoy the benefits off a tuner so I guess thats all that matters.

Re: Looking for the best tuner for my Ranger! Need input.
My ranger towing a 5x10 trailer with a riding mower and push mower does okay. Once I switch to tow mod it drives like the trailer is not even there.
I could almost guarantee if you had to rangers with the same options. You drove them not knowing which one had the tuner and which one didn't. You would say the one with the tuner was a better driving truck.
