i disagree that the SOHC is underpowered in these trucks but towing anything will slow it down especially if you choose the wrong gear. what gear did you downshift to to pass?

Okay, okay.... I wasn't expecting "wow", but to be literally at the floor with the accelerator barely maintaining highway speed....

Just towing, no passing, small hill ahead and downshift to 4th, barely maintained speed

ok you still havent told us how big this boat is or how much it weighs. 5th gear is the OD gear and while towing the truck can struggle to keep speed on the highway in that gear.

14' boat with 50hp motor. So light that it can be manouvered by pickiing up at the tonque and push around by hand.

Today, i shall perform the 0-60 and time.

I used to have a Jeep Commanche with a 2.something and it had the same power feeling as my Ranger

dont be afraid to let that SOHC breathe a little, they like RPM's so down shift it and let it go. also as others mentioned the axle gear ratio has alot to do with how well it can pull a gear, especially while towing.

6th gear in my trans am is OD, if I stomp on the accelerator at highway speeds in OD, I ain't going any where lol(and this has close to 200hp more than my Ranger); OD is for cruising only. I have 4.10's in my Ranger as well, downshifting to 4th is usually plenty to pass someone, but as 01_Ranger said, these trucks make their peak power above 5000 RPM's, so if you try to stomp on the gas at 2k RPM's, there won't be much power there any way.

last few weeks i've been checking my MPG's quite heavily and best MPG was 22mpg babying it this week 19.5mpg flooring it almost everywhere lol so i guess the truck does like RPM's not too bad for driving with a lead foot

bang her in to third at 75 and wail on her like the dirty girl she is.

the 5r55e auto will downshift to third all day at 75 mph and pull hard all the way up to 5200rpm. damn four speed with od auto.. Im pretty sure the m5od-r1hd will handle it if the auto does.

ill trade you trans setups

in my 2.9l if i want some serious acceleration i put it into 3rd gear but normally 4th gear does just fine for me and 5th gear isnt ment for accelerating its ment for economy
