Default 4l v6 noise on low rpm only

Hi, I am new here, would like to know if anyone else has a similar noise on their Ranger. I have a 04 FX4 with a 4l v6 sohc. Amsoil 5w30, It has about 107 Kms on it. It runs smooth all the time, but on low idle, around 750 rpm, it has a little bit of a rattle. It seems to come from the bottom of the engine and towards the back. But you know how noise travels. it disappears as soon as you bring the rpm up to 1000 and you do not hear it upon acceleration at any rpm. I have a read alot about noisy chain tensioners but always at higher rpm. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Put friend in drivers seat(or anonymous stranger will do), have them play with the accelerator, you slide under the front and listen carefully. Determine whether it is coming from within the motor or from the exhaust pipes. Typically it is from the heat shields but your discription is very vague, you might give it a little tap, tap, tappie with a rubber mallet in places along the exhaust pipes.

manual trans or auto?

description of the sound is sorta vague.....if manual, I'd start thinking throwout bearing. Does it sound like a 'rumble', now low pitched, but a higher pitched rumble? Does the sound go away when you push in on the clutch?

If it was timing chain, it'd literally sound like a chains hitting eachother.

thanks for your reply(s) It's an automatic. the noise is, I guess more like a loud tick or a tap. Had a mechanic buddy look at it, he could hear the noise. He thought probably timing chain, but he said that these 4L V6's are normally a little noisey. I had a 93 with the same engine, over 230 k on it, never heard that noise. I am going to have a closer look a the heat sheilds and exhuast and start from there. thanks for the advice.

you had a 93, it AINT the same engine. Pushrod vs overhead cam. Totally different engines.

I know some 03's and some 04's report hearing the chain with higher miles, I'd suspect rear timing chain....which requires the engine to be pulled. I suspect the chain guides are going away(plastic, they wear). Mine was rattleing from 40,000 miles til 110,000 when it got so bad that I said screw it and put in a new engine with 1,000 miles for LESS money than it wouldve cost to repair the old engine.

I took vids of my truck before my engine swap.....purely to hear the timing chain humongous rattle. I need to get 'em edited and put up.

Ya, I guess its not the same lol, in anycase, thats what I have been reading about, worn guides/tensioners. I am still hoping its something other than that. I still have to get back underneath and rule some cheaper stuff.
